Remembering through bones and blood

~Imbolc ~

This midway point is when we shift gears in our minds and bodies because we begin to absorb more light through our eyes. (Ditch the sunglasses if you can.) The northern hemisphere is warming and waking up and the days are slowly but surely stretching out and getting longer. We are in constant communication with our environment. Energy is building in the roots!

I was chatting with some friends the other day about the longing to feel connected with our own family histories; this desire to pull a thread of our lineage and follow it right down to the roots and beginning. But for so many of us, there are many missing pieces to this puzzle. We are trying to remember and fill in the blanks with the knowledge and information we have. That’s why we light a candle, leave out an offering, tell stories, or circle with friends and kindred spirits, and continue to “do the work.” We are remembering through bones and blood, the practices of our ancestors who were deeply, intricately connected and not separate from nature. We are dissolving the residue and remembering that we are also not separate from nature. We are nature and we have big work to do in this lifetime. Plants do better with strong, solid, healthy, well fed roots. Perhaps humans work this way too?

I’m flipping through seed catalogues today, burning mugwort and dreaming about the coming months. I wonder sometimes if I get close enough, and still enough with the plants, will they whisper and bring forth some of the missing pieces to the puzzle? Adventures in gardening and remembering continue…
